Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet who’s not crying, YOU’RE CRYING: It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs!

This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who has seen it before, and two sons who have.

Welcome to Episode 196, covering series 5, episode 10: Vincent and the Doctor

Super-short Recap

This is the one where the real villain was the demon inside us all, all along.

Production notes

Misc Trivia

  • The original script was totally a historical piece where they hung out with Van Gogh for a day. Executives insisted on a monster.

Cast

  • Dr. Henry Black – Bill Nighy
    • He agreed to this role on the condition that he go uncredited, and that he didn’t have to do any publicity photos or interviews
    • RTD offered him the role of the Ninth Doctor!
    • During Doctor Who Lockdown, Matt Smith theorized that Doctor Black was a future incarnation of the Doctor, like the Curator.
    • The producers said that the reason they cast such a big name for such a small role was because they wanted the audience to listen to his lines as he gave biographical info about Van Gogh.
    • He was in Love Actually
  • Amelia Pond – Karen Gillan
    • Tripp noted her height. She’s 5’10 ¾“
    • She was also the first companion to star alongside the same Doctor for two seasons since Ace

Checklist

  • Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?
    • No
    • It was originally entitled The Eyes that See the Darkness
  • Creature of the week
    • Krafayis
  • Psychic paper
    • Ministry of Art and… Artiness
  • Catchphrases
    • Bow ties are cool – mutual bowtie admiration club
  • Random Jiggery Pokery
    • Translation circuit – was it translating her accent too?
      • Vincent says they have the same accent. Tony Curran is from Glasgow
  • Jibberty Jabberty
    • Friction contrafibrulator

Other stuff we noticed

  • Van Go, Van Goff, or Van Gaw-phlegm
  • That thing chased him for several feet and then when he ducked behind the corner, it was just passing the TARDIS

Stuff we didn’t notice

  • The song at the end is Chances by Athlete. Matt Smith was a fan and suggested the song
  • Though we didn’t manage to choose another Moffat episode, Moffat has said this is HIS favorite Eleventh Doctor episode

Who’s Who?

  • Who is Amy?
    • She’s sad but she doesn’t remember why.
      • I hear the song of your sadness.
    • Be kind to yourself.
      • Twelve said “Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.” during his regeneration speech
    • Not really the marrying kind
    • They would’ve had the #UltimateGinge
  • Who is Vincent?
    • I may be mad, but I’m not stupid.
    • He took to time travel without missing a beat!
  • Who is the Eleventh Doctor?
    • The Doctor of Hope – My experience is that there’s always hope.
    • He’s more emotionally in tune than we’ve ever seen him
      • Followed by The Lodger, where he’s as clueless as you can get
    • Is this how time normally passes? Reeeaaaally slowly, and in the right order.
    • I’m armed with overconfidence, this, and a small screwdriver
    • The first doctor ever to make a difference in Van Gogh’s life

Can we talk about good things and bad things?

  • We didn’t make a difference at all?
  • Every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things. But the bad things don’t spoil the good things or make them unimportant.

Overall impressions

  • How did you like it this time compared to last time?
    • Jared –
    • Austin – more and more every time
    • Corbin –
    • Tripp –

    • It’s free on the Doctor Who youtube page!
    • Do some primer work here – this is NOT cannon (officially), this is shut-up-and-eat-your-popcorn at its best! Just enjoy!

After that, we’re covering Star Trek: Discovery’s Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.
