187 Eve of the Daleks

This is the one where the Doctor loses to the Daleks! Until she doesn't. Also Yaz and the Doctor might be a thing.

Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet stuck in a time loop: It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs!

This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who seen it before, and two sons who have.

Welcome to Episode 187, covering the 2022 New Year’s Special: Eve of the Daleks

Super-short Recap

This is the one where the Doctor loses to the Daleks! Until she doesn’t. Also Yaz and the Doctor might be a thing.

  • Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?
    • no, but there were a lot of theories about its meaning
  • Creature of the week
    • Dalek
      • Gatling gun blaster
      • A stupidly named robot! (according to Sarah)
      • They are never sorry
      • They are NOT fair
      • “I am NOT Nick” – Nick Briggs
      • They were actually good in this episode
    • She’s doing a full reset to clear out the Flux debris, minimize the number of doors
      • She’s never done this before
  • Sonic
    • The sonic is doing the notification bell thing again
    • She used it to jam the Dalek’s blaster again, but they’ve learned

Other stuff we noticed

  • Tripp: why is it christmas!?!
    • It’s “What are you doing New Year’s Eve?”
  • Time loop. Time loop. Groundhog Day…
  • The loops were taking longer even though they were getting shorter.

Who’s Who?

  • Who is Sarah?
  • Who is Nick?
    • Ex… terminated
  • Who is Dan?
    • He’s the inferior human, according to the Dalek.
    • You saved the entire universe last week. I owe ya one.
  • Who is Jeff?
  • Who is Yaz?
    • We’re never gonna get that moment on the beach where you tell everything that happened to you, are we? Sure we are!
    • Sarah’s friend says good-hearted weirdos are the keepers, and Yaz glances at the Doctor
    • Stop leaving us behind!
    • She’s never admitted it to anyone, not even herself.
  • Who is the Doctor?
    • Something seems impossible, we try, we fail, we learn, we fail again, but better, we make friends, we learn again, and ultimately we succeed. Because THIS is being alive, and it’s better than the alternative.
      • Recall her convo with Azure
    • She likes you likes you. I don’t understand what you’re saying Dan.
      • But for some reason, you act like you don’t in front of her and in front of me

Can we talk about Thazmine?

Can we talk about how this time loop works?

Classic Who Connections

  • Cloister bell
  • Classic looking Dalek except for the gatling gun blaster (late 60s/early 70s daleks like from The Day of the Daleks)
  • The Daleks perused The Doctor and companions for the purpose of exterminating them in The Chase
  • The 1605 Guy Fawkes reference was never on TV, it was in a Doctor Who novel and on a video game
  • Sea devils are coming back!

Overall impressions

  • Overall rating out of 10
    • Jared – 9 gatling blasters
    • Austin – 5 hmmms
    • Corbin – 5 “5 out of 10s”
    • Tripp – 7 ThAzMiNeS

The Game Plan

Next week, we’re finally going back to our Master Plan to watch Logopolis. Then, by request, we’re headed to Disney+ for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Just a heads up, this one is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. According to IMDb, there’s no cussing, no nudity, and seems mostly bloodless.
