159 The Woman Who Fell to Earth

This is the one where the Doctor, a guy who can’t ride a bike, a newbie cop, and two old people get attacked by a tooth face monster and a half living half tentacle light ball. And earth is not a hunting ground!

Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet that is fending off teeth monsters while recording this. It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian, and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs!

This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who’s seen it before, and two sons who haven’t.

Welcome to Episode 159 covering season 11 episode 1: The Woman Who Fell to Earth

Super-short Recap

This is the one where the Doctor, a guy who can’t ride a bike, a newbie cop, and two old people get attacked by a tooth face monster and a half living half tentacle light ball. And earth is not a hunting ground!

Production notes

  • Story #277
  • Originally aired October 7, 2018 to 10.95 million UK viewers and 1.37 million American viewers!
    • This makes it the highest ratings of a regular episode (not counting Christmas and the 50th) since Partners in Crime in 2008!
    • It’s also the highest ever premiere of a new Doctor (Rose did 10.81 million).
  • Written by: Chris Chibnall
  • Directed by: Jamie Childs

Misc Trivia

  • As we’ve mentioned before, this was the biggest shift since Eleventh Hour
    • New showrunner
    • New crew
    • New Doctor
    • New companion(s)
    • New TARDIS (eventually…)
    • New sonic
    • New music – new composer! Segun Akinola
  • No opening credits! You had to wait until the end credits to hear the new theme song and see (sort of) the new opening credits sequence

Cast

  • We’re gonna do something different here. Since we have 4 new main actors, we’re gonna split it up some.
  • The Thirteenth Doctor – Jodi Whittaker
    • Starred with David Tennant in Broadchurch
    • Broadchurch also featured Olivia Colman who played the mom with the creepy little girls in Eleventh Hour
    • Broadchurch was also run by Chris Chibnall
  • Obviously, she is the first OFFICIAL woman to play the Doctor.
    • However, in the parody The Curse of the Fatal Death, there are something like 5 incarnations of the Doctor. When the 13th Doctor shows up, she’s a woman, played by Joanna Lumley!

      • What do yall think of it?

Other stuff we noticed

  • Press here for giant Hershey’s kiss!
  • We’re back to not believing in aliens!
    • What was it we chalked it up to? Humanity’s unbelievable ability to forget?
  • Alright then, troops. Not troops. Team? Gang? Fam?
  • No one dies on screen
  • The difference in production level, cinematography, and tone is unreal!
    • Watch World Enough & Time, then go watch Rose and the difference is huge. But that was 13 years down the road! And this is an even bigger change.
  • I am valued. I am special. Somebody out there wants me.
    • Uh yeah… somebody does!
  • Introducing, a quick emotional investment prepped for immediate termination!
    • Grandad in the guard shack

Who’s Who?

    • He has dyspraxia, a coordination disorder
    • He may have accidentally accepted the worst EULA in Earth’s history
    • His mom died 6 years ago, and now his nan

    • Reminds Tripp of Wilf
    • He wouldn’t have touched the button
    • He’s the cautious one of the bunch
  • Who is Grace?
    • Rambunctious, playful
    • Loving
    • Bravest of the bunch
    • Is it wrong to be enjoying this?
    • A companion who never was
      • I thought for sure she was going on the TARDIS
    • The woman who fell to Earth!
    • She died like she lived, trying to help other people
  • Who is Yasmin “Yaz” Khan?
    • She’s a rookie cop, but she wants to do something… more
    • Tripp thinks she’s into Ryan
      • Corbin agrees
  • Who is the Doctor?
    • 9:27 before we see her on screen!
    • She hates empty pockets!
    • Why are you calling me madam? Cuz you’re a woman? Am I? Does it suit me?
    • Kinda mischievous. “Can we have the lights and sirens on?”
    • I never go anywhere that’s just initials
    • I’m not yet who I am. Brain and body rebooting, reformatting.
    • She would have touched the button
    • She’s good at building things, probably
    • There’s this moment when you’re sure your about to die, and then your born. It’s terrifying.
    • If there’s one thing I’m certain of: when people need help, I never refuse.
    • You’re interfering in things you don’t understand. Well, we all need a hobby
    • We are all capable of the most incredible change. We can evolve while still staying true to who we are. We can honor who we’ve been and choose who we want to be next.
      • ATTENTION AUDIENCE!
    • I’m the Doctor: sorting out fair play throughout the universe.
    • Have you got family? No, lost them a long time ago.
      • I carry them with me: what they would’ve thought and said and done, make them a part of me.
    • I’m just a traveller. Sometimes I see things need fixin’, I do what I can.
    • Been a long time since she’s bought women’s clothes

Corbin has feelings

  • The guy had no had no right to kick him off the crane
    • Why?
      • “He did this to himself”
      • Basically because he was going to kill these other people he deserved the fate he got
      • But if the end result is him dying and the reason he dies is because he was going to kill someone else then why does it matter whether it was self-inflicted or not
    • Also the doctor is incredibly hypocritical here
      • As we like to point out every once in a while, he once killed a bunch of babies simply for being born
      • Even here she tricks the alien into killing himself, so how is this any different then just killing him outright

Classic Who Connections

  • The Doctor again has a Northern accent. Which was first seen with the Eighth Doctor
  • The Doctor fell from a really tall height and survived when regenerating form the Fourth to Fifth Doctor. (Logopolis)
  • Once again we see the Doctor having memory loss after regeneration.
  • The Seventh Doctor met a creature named Kane in the colony Iceworld that could kill with an icy touch in Dragonfire

Overall impressions

  • Overall rating out of 10
    • Jared – 8 Doctors who were white haired Scotsmen half an hour ago
    • Austin – 10 Jodi scronches
    • Corbin – 8 hershey kisses
    • Tripp – 9 unhinged jaws
  • Creep Level – out of 500
    • Jared – 100
    • Austin – 300
    • Corbin –  100
    • Tripp – 75

Theories

  • Will they or won’t they?
    • Corbin – I hope not, but probably
    • Tripp – It’ll be teased out the whole series but not resolved

The Game Plan

  • In keeping with our current emergency plans, next week, we’re NOT doing a Timey Wimey. Instead, we’re charging forward covering season 11 episode 2 The Ghost Monument
