142 Classic Who Rewind: Dr. Who and the Daleks

This is the one where they do the exact same story as The Daleks but worse. Also, the TARDIS is really big.

Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet hosted by a klutzy alternate version of its actual hosts: It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!

My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian, and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs!

This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who’s seen it before, and two sons who haven’t.

Welcome to Episode 142, covering the 1965 movie Dr. Who and the Daleks.

Production notes

  • Premiered June 25, 1965
  • Written by: Milton Subotsky
  • Directed by: Gordon Flemyng

Misc Trivia

  • The BBC bought several of these Daleks and used them in The Chase, which actually aired before the movie premiered
  • I went looking into this version of Barbara to try to clear up some things that we’ll discuss below. However, I fell down an interesting rabbit hole. Apparently, there is a 1987 short story called Doctor Who: The Third Motion Picture. In this story, the script for the never-released third Peter Cushing movie is found. Barbara somehow becomes self-aware, realizing that she is a fictional character. She manages to literally break the fourth wall and kill the script writer so she can escape her fictional world.

Cast

  • Dr. Who – Peter Cushing
    • Played Dr. Frankenstein several times, Van Helsing a few times, Sherlock several times
    • He was Dr. Terror in Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors
    • He was also Grand Moff Tarkin!
  • Ian Chesterton – Roy Castle
    • Biff Bailey in Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors
  • Barbara – Jennie Linden
    • She starred alongside Peter Cushing in one of the Sherlock Holmes miniseries he did

Checklist

  • Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?
    • nope
  • Creature of the week
    • The Daleks!
      • Technicolor Daleks!
      • That black/silver/gold one looked dope
      • They had red lights
      • Some of them had claws instead of plungers
      • The red one was Austin’s fav – Iron Man Dalek!
      • It had a webbed claw
      • Blowtorch Dalek!
      • What’s with the gas nozzle instead of the x-ray laser?!
        • Apparently they couldn’t achieve the x-ray effect on movie film, so they were gonna give them flame throwers instead. They thought this would freak out kids, so they went to the other extreme and used fire extinguishers
      • Flashing lights not lining up with speech
  • Jiggery Pokery
    • TARDIS
      • TARDIS, not the TARDIS
      • It’s taller on the outside… than the show’s version…
      • It doesn’t travel through the time vortex as much as beams through time and space like Star Trek
      • Rather than a broken chameleon circuit, it just looks like that
        • But it does have the right doors on the inside!
      • This is its maiden voyage
    • Sonic
    • Psychic paper
    • Random
  • Jibberty Jabberty
    • Super-ionized electrokinetic preoscillator
    • In electrokinetic theory, space expands to accommodate for the time necessary to encompass its dimensions

Other stuff we noticed

  • Holy Pink Panther intro, Batman!
  • Parallels to The Daleks
    • Random travel without setting coordinates
    • The fluid link broke
  • Were they feeding them diarrhea?!
  • At a certain point, the differences fade away and this is just a beat-by-beat remake of The Daleks.
  • I don’t know that they actually ever said “Skaro”

Who’s Who?

  • Who is Ian?
    • He’s a freakin clutz!
    • He’s straight up dating Barbara.
    • He’s way less heroic
  • Who is Susie?
    • So, she’s still the Doctor’s granddaughter, but only because she’s Barbara’s daughter… who’s the daughter of Dr. Who.
    • She’s also not Susan, but Susie.
    • Ok, so after doing some research, I don’t know HOW she’s related!
  • Who is Barbara?
    • Wait, is she Dr. Who’s daughter or granddaughter? She called him Grandfather at one point, but I thought she called him Dad/Father at the beginning
      • According to the wikia, they are BOTH his granddaughters
  • Who is Dr. Who?
    • First, he’s actually called Dr. Who. Like, first name Bob, last name Who or something.
    • Everyone else is reading The Science of Science, he’s reading comics
    • He can’t remember Ian’s name, just like Hartnell
    • He’s definitely got a Doctory outfit on
      • He’s got a fob watch!
