The Doctor is all alone. Again. But suddenly there is another Doctor. Or is it the same Doctor? Or not at all? Who knows.

Welcome to Episode 55 covering the 2008 Christmas Special: The Next Doctor

Super-short Recap

This is the one where the Doctor meets… the Doctor? A companion-less Doctor steps out of his TARDIS on a snowy Christmas Eve in 19th century London. Everything is beautiful and Dickensian, when suddenly someone shouts “Doctor!” Naturally, he goes running towards the call only to be met by a confused woman who doesn’t understand who he is or why he’s trying to help. Then something strange happens. Another man shows up proclaiming himself the Doctor, the one, the original, and the best!

Naturally, the Doctor is fascinated, assuming he’s meeting a future incarnation of himself. But this other Doctor doesn’t recognize him. In fact, he can’t remember anything before his regeneration, only that something was lost, taken from him, by Cybermen. The Doctor’s story starts falling apart slowly. His sonic screwdriver isn’t very sonic, his TARDIS is a hot air balloon, and his fob watch is just a fob watch.

Turns out, he isn’t the Doctor at all. He’s Jackson Lake, a newcomer to London Town. He became the Doctor when a Cyberman infostamp overwrote his memory. Meanwhile, the Cybermen, with the help of Mrs. Hartigan, are using the children of London as labor to build the CyberKing. The real Doctor, of course, defeats them after saving the children.

Jackson somehow manages to convince the Doctor to stay for a Christmas feast to remember those we’ve lost. Merry Christmas, Doctor. Merry Christmas, Jackson. Merry Christmas Corbin and Tripp, and Merry Christmas to you all out there. God bless us, everyone!
